Mohammad Al-Rumaihi

Born in 1942, Kuwaiti sociologist Dr. Mohammad Alrumaihi starts the interview with talking about his childhood and family background. He speaks about his earliest memories in his house in Sharq and the role of women in old Kuwait. He spends some time telling us about his early elementary education and attending high school in Egypt. Upon finishing high school, he continues his studies and majors in sociology in Cairo. Moving back to Kuwait in the 1960s, Alrumaihi recalls working at the Ministry of Education and leaving Kuwait to England on a scholarship. He elaborates on getting his PhD from Durham University and focusing on Bahrain in his thesis. In the early 70s, he comes back to Kuwait and starts teaching at Kuwait University and working at the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters. He delves into personal and national cultural productions and talks about Iftah ya Simsim and Al-Arabi Magazine. Alrumaihi focuses on the invasion of Kuwait and how they started “Sout Al-Kuwait” newspaper in London. After the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, he tells us about Al-Qurain Festival and various cultural and literary events. At the end of the interview, he shares with us what he is currently working on and his personal interests.
