Hussain Al-Youhaحسين اليوحةIn this interview Hussain Al-Youha talks about being born in Dubai and his early childhood memories of moving to Kuwait. He talks about living in Sharq with two extended families and then relocating to Salmiya. He describes the old neighborhoods, Souq Al-Mubarakiyya, and his early education. Al-Youha discusses his first job working for the Kuwait Oil Company in the 1940s; he describes the modes of transportation back then and living in “Arab Village” in Ahmadi. He also talks about working as a taxi driver and the years he spent working for the Fire service Directorate. He then delves into his role in establishing the Kuwait Trade Union Federation and his involvement with the labor movement locally and internationally. Al-Youha tells the story of the invasion of Kuwait by the Iraqi forces. He talks about being part of the resistance during the occupation and working on making fake identification papers for Kuwaitis. He also talks about leaving Kuwait to Bahrain in October 1990 and then moving back after the liberation in 1991. Finally, he talks about his imprisonment in the 1960s in Kuwait. Fareed Abdalفريد عبدالFareed Abdal begins the interview by talking about living near Fireej Shiyookh, Al-Dasma, and later in Fintas. He recalls his childhood memories in Fintas and growing up in a mixed community of hadar and badu. He talks about the different activities he enjoyed as a kid including fishing and horse riding. He describes the fish market in Fahaheel, the environment, and wildlife there. Abdal discusses the education system in the 1960s and describes how there was a focus on art and immediate interaction with the surrounding environment. He shares his memories of studying in Al-Fintas Elementary School and Al-Fahaheel High School. He speaks fondly of practicing sports in school, participating in plays, and reading books and magazines. In the 1970s, Abdal talks about getting a scholarship to study architecture in the United States. Moving into the 80s, he focuses on going back to Kuwait, working in the Municipality, and the difficulties he faced working at an architectural consultancy firm. He then delves into his art career and talks about the link between art, architecture, and calligraphy. The last part of the interview concentrates on the invasion of Kuwait and the first months of occupation. Abdal talks about his personal experience of being married to a Puerto Rican, and the critical situation of foreigners during the occupation. Waleed Al-Rujaibوليد الرجيبWaleed Al-Rujaib starts the interview by talking about growing up in Hawali. He recalls living with his extended family and his early memories of tending animals with his grandmother. He describes his relationship with his parents and how they instilled in him the love of reading and writing. He explains how this love grew during his elementary education and speaks of the influence of Palestinian teachers on him during his school years. Talking about his early teen years, Al-Rujaib describes his love of cinema, books and magazines, and music. During that age he moved from Hawali to Qadsiya and later to Rumaithiya. He then talks about his early adult life and describes studying social work in Egypt, the difficulties he faced there, and the good times he experienced while studying abroad. Al-Rujaib speaks about coming back to Kuwait in the 1970s and working in the field of education. He talks about getting married, continuing his education in the United States, and having his first child there. After finishing his studies in the US, he describes coming back to Kuwait and working at Kuwait University in the 1980s. A large portion of the interview is dedicated to talking about the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Al-Rujaib describes in detail the beginning of the invasion, participating in demonstrations against the Iraqi occupation, civil disobedience, and being part of the resistance. After that he speaks about the liberation and leaving Kuwait to Bahrain to flee the pollution of the oil fires. Sarah Akbarسارة أكبرIn her interview, Sarah Akbar takes us to the beginning of her childhood in Magwa’a and recalls her fond memories of the oil fields. She recollects times that were filled with friendships, academic excellence, and the closeness of the Kuwaiti society. She notes that the beginning of her love of knowledge was with her motivation to learn to read and taking English lessons with her neighbor. Building off her love for academia, she reflects on her life as an engineering student at Kuwait University. As she reflects on her early career at Kuwait Oil Company, she retells her story of being the first woman to work in the oil fields and recounts her first day at her dream job. She revisits her time during the invasion by giving insight on both personal efforts of aiding the people of Kuwait and professional ones as an active advocate for Kuwait during her time as an employee of Kuwait Oil Company. She also contributed great efforts on the national recuperation of closing the oil wells that were affected during the invasion. She ends her interview by commenting on her ventures after working at Kuwait Oil Company and her experience building Kuwait Energy. Looking to the future and going back to her love of learning, she notes her consideration of building on her educational career with another degree. Louloua Al-Mullaلولوة الملاIn her interview, Louloua Al-Mulla talks about her birth place in Sharq. She talks about her childhood and family in the 1940s. She describes her middle school education and the difference between parenting back then and now. In her description of her childhood, she refers to her relationship with the sea and the close bond children formed with the surrounding environment in old Kuwait. She also mentions the significant role her father played in society and his connections with foreigners. Moving on from her childhood, Al-Mulla reflects on her time studying abroad in Beirut and her interest in politics. She then tells the story of coming back to Kuwait and studying English Literature at Kuwait University. While being a student at Kuwait University she started a family in the early 1970s. During that time she talks about her husband’s political career, motherhood, and student activism. Her activism as a student paved the way for her feminist political work with the Women Cultural and Social Society in the 1980s. Al-Mulla spends the next part of the interview telling us about the Iraqi invasion and her work abroad in Egypt during the occupation. Towards the end of the interview she delves into her involvement with the WCSS after the liberation of Kuwait up until now. She explains their different projects, achievements, and focuses specifically on women’s political rights. Sami Mohammadسامي محمدIn this interview, artist Sami Mohammad talks about his life starting with his early childhood in Sharq in the early 1940s. He talks about his education in Al Sabah school in 1949 and recalls his memories of Al Sawaber neighborhood. He describes the old mud houses and how as an artist in the making he used its materials to create little statues for kids in the neighborhood. Mohammad also tells us about growing up in a simple family living in an extended family house, games that kids used to play, and his personal favorite foods and sweets. He relays his favorite subjects in school and how he got interested in art through the encouragement of teachers and school activities. Moving into his teenage years and early adulthood, Mohammad talks about studying at Kaifan High School and moving from Sawaber in Sharq to Kaifan in the 1950s. He speaks about his relationship with the sea and elaborates on the process of getting water and the scarcity back then. He talks about the early days of the discovery of oil, the land acquisition, as well as Ahmadi and the oil company workers. Talking about his relationship with his parents, he goes into explaining his father’s profession of making bishoot (cloaks). Mohammad also speaks about the diwaniya and the business dealings that used to take place there. As a young adult he tells us about his pastime of hunting birds and going to the movies in Hawali. Mohammad finally talks about his art career and his complete dedication to it. He describes the early days of joining the Free Art Atelier in Murqab, the artists he met there, and the process of establishing the Kuwait Arts Association in 1967. From Egypt to Vermont he tells us about his experiences studying abroad. He fondly remembers how he got access to ancient Egyptian art in Egypt and staying with an American family in Vermont. Towards the end of the interview he focuses on exhibitions in Kuwait and abroad in Egypt, Syria, Japan, and all over the globe. Claudia Alrashoudكلوديا الرشودBorn in Riverside, California in 1957, Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud talks about her childhood growing up in a suburban neighborhood and going to elementary school in the 1960s. She focuses during the first part of the interview on talking about the many travels her and her parents did during her early years. She tells the story of living in Thailand during the Vietnam War and living in Kansas and moving back to California in her late teenage years. Al Rashoud then reminisces about living in Italy in the late 1970s and going to university in California. She speaks about how her passion for photography and writing grew during her university years. In 1979 she moved to Kuwait and started working for the Arab Times. She discusses several articles she covered for the newspaper such as an article on Al Mubarakiyya and one on camel racing in Ahmadi. Al Rashoud recalls Kuwait in the early 1980s and speaks about different activities and places her and her parents used to visit. Moving on to the 1990s, Al Rashoud talks about the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2nd, 1990. She narrates her journey of evacuation from Kuwait to Baghdad and then to London with her two boys. Recalling their stay in California during the occupation, she explains her activism against the Iraqi invasion and how she participated in many events to make the unheard stories public. Al Rashoud then discusses going back to Kuwait after liberation and witnessing all the destruction caused by the Iraqi troops. She explains the recuperation period and the great efforts done to rebuild Kuwait and focuses on the issue of oil fires. The last part of the interview is dedicated to Al Rashoud’s published work and research. She tells the story of working on Kuwait Before and After the Storm, Kuwait Kaleidoscope, and Kuwait's Age of Sail. She also talks about her passion for animal welfare and her volunteer work with rescued animals. Moving into his teenage years and early adulthood, Bishara spends some time talking about his days at Al Shwaikh High School in the 1950s. In the same era, he speaks about the discovery of oil and the British presence in Kuwait. Bishara finishes this segment on his early adulthood by telling us about his experiences studying in Egypt and then in Britain. Bishara speaks about his early career working in foreign affairs. He focuses on his time as Kuwait’s permanent representative to the United Nations and his devotion to the Palestinian cause. He then recalls his appointment as the first Secretary General for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf; he tells stories about the ten years he spent in Saudi Arabia and the political and social life there. Towards the end of the interview, Bishara remembers the events of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and tells us about the recuperation efforts after the liberation of Kuwait. Adnan Shihab-Eldinعدنان شهاب الدينIn this interview, Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin talks about his personal history starting with his family’s background and their travels around the region. Born in 1943 in Palestine in Yafa, Shihab-Eldin remembers very little about his birthplace which he left at an early age. He recalls growing up in Bagdad and receiving his primary education there. He speaks about his passion for reading and going to middle school in Damascus, Syria. He stresses on his connection with nature and the surrounding environment which sparked his critical thinking and his love of science. After Syria, he talks about moving back to Kuwait in the 1950s with his family and joining Al Shwaikh’s High School. Moving into his early adulthood, Shihab-Eldin spends some time talking about studying abroad in England and then in Egypt. Before acquiring his degree in Cairo, he tells the story of moving to the United States to finish his university education in the 1960s and later his higher education in the 1970s. During the 1970s he moves between Kuwait and the United States exploring different possibilities. Settling in Kuwait, Shihab-Eldin talks about working in Kuwait University and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. In the 1980s, he briefly tells us about his experience in both Geneva and Zurich. Advancing into the late 1980s and early 1990s, he focuses on the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and his pivotal role within the free Kuwait movement abroad. After liberation, he remembers coming back to Kuwait and the massive destruction it had gone through. Abdulatif Al Hamadعبداللطيف الحمدIn this brief but rich interview, Mr. Abdulatif Alhammad takes us to the beginning of his childhood in Salmiya and recalls his earliest memories of growing up near the sea. He then talks about his journey to study abroad in Egypt at an early age. He speaks fondly about his time in Victoria College and the lifelong friendships he formed there. He notes that his sense of independence and passion for learning developed while he was abroad. After Victoria College, Alhammad joined the American University of Cairo attempting to study journalism. Soon after he moved to the United States to pursue a degree in International Relations. As he reflects on his days in the US, he tells the story of volunteering for the United Nations. He then speaks about the transition to working with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. He also revisits his time as a minister of finance and a minister of planning in the 1980s. Towards the end of the interview, Alhammad focuses on his career at the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. He explains the pivotal role he played during the invasion and the contributions of the Fund. Alhammad then talks about his retirement and his plans for the future. Faisal Al-Ayyarفيصل العيارBorn in Al-Jahra in 1954, Mr. Faisal Al-Ayyar starts the interview by recalling his childhood memories and growing up surrounded by nature. He then talks about moving to Al-Mirqab and Al-Khaldiyya in the 1960s. He nostalgically recounts his years in elementary school and being with the Kuwait Boy Scouts. In middle school, Al-Ayyar remembers traveling during the summer to Lebanon with his family and all the good times they experienced there. After going to middle school in Al-Faiha, Al-Ayyar talks about joining Kaifan High School and how diverse it was. His rebellious high school days culminated in him joining the Military College in the 1970s. He then received a scholarship to study aviation in the United States. Shortly after that he came back to Kuwait with his family and started his career in aviation. Al-Ayyar shifted careers in the 1980s and his interest and passion for the economy and the stock market started to take shape. Within the same time period he speaks about the Souk Al-Manakh Stock Market Crash. In the mid-80s, he began working with Al-Fetouh for General Trading until work was halted by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. A significant part of the interview is dedicated to Al-Ayyar’s memories and experiences during the occupation and liberation periods. She speaks about their neighborhood, the games they used to play as kids, and the strong bonds between society members from different backgrounds. She stresses on the importance of reading and how it was an essential part of her upbringing. Moving into her formal education, Mama Anisa talks about the first school she attended, describing in detail the building and the school system. She also spends some time speaking about how she excelled in memorizing the Quran, which is something she cherished as a child and continues to until this moment. She further mentions the celebration and prize she received after memorizing the whole Quran. Mama Anisa then moves into speaking about her career in education, and how she started teaching as a teenager. She emphasizes the role traveling to different countries had on her life and career. Advancing into her work in the Ministry of Information, she tells us about how she became to be everyone’s mother, Mama Anisa. The last part of the interview is dedicated to the Iraqi invasion. Salam Kaoukjiسلام قاوقجيBorn in Egypt in 1947, Salam Kaoukji starts the interview with her earliest childhood memories in Cairo. she talks about her upbringing and early education in Cairo and the influence learning several languages had on her. In her early teen years, she moves to her homeland, Lebanon. There, she attends a boarding school in the 1960s. She speaks fondly of her parents, and especially her mother, who occupies a special space in her heart. Her mother’s artistic background and cheerful attitude colored Kaoukji’s life as a child as well as an adult. After finishing her university education, Kaoukji talks about the beginning of her career in design. During the same period, she also spends some time speaking about how she met her husband and becoming a mother for the first time. Due to difficult circumstances in Lebanon, her and her family decide to move to Kuwait. Kaoukji describes arriving to Kuwait in the 1970s. She continues her work in graphic design and pursues her passion for education by working with Efta’h Ya Simsim’s magazine. Moving into the 1980s, and early 1990s, Kaoukji narrates the events of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. She talks about hosting people from different nationalities in her house during the occupation to keep them safe. Hamza Olayanحمزة عليانBorn in a small village in Lebanon, Hamza Olayan starts the interview with his earliest childhood memories with his siblings and friends. He talks about his upbringing and early education in Lebanon and the encouragement and love he received from his family. In his early teen years, he moves to Beirut to look for work to support himself and his family. There, he lands a job at the archives of Alhawadeth Magazine. Olayan also finds the time to continue his education while working on his career. In Beirut, Olayan gets the opportunity to work in different magazines and newspapers. Among these places are Alhawadeth, Aldistor, and Alsafeer. Upon the civil war in Lebanon, Olayan decides to move to Kuwait in 1976. He tells us the story of arriving to Kuwait and building the archives in Alqabas Newspaper. After settling in Kuwait, Olayan starts a family and enjoys the social and cultural life of Kuwait in the 70s. Olayan dedicates the last part of the interview to talking about the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the events of the occupation. He describes his journey leaving occupied Kuwait through Iraq to Lebanon. He returns to Kuwait shortly after the liberation in 1991 and speaks about the period of rebuilding Kuwait and repairing the damage caused by the Iraqi forces. Bader Buresliبدر بورسليIn this interview, Kuwaiti poet Bader Buresli starts with his childhood in Sharq and Almurqab. He talks about his earliest memories in Bin ‘Aqool Neigborhood, then Jibla, and later in Shamiyya. He tells us about his early interest in songs and poetry and writing as a young teenager. Losing his father when he was a child, he speaks about his close relationship with his mother, siblings, and uncles. Moving into his teenage years and early adulthood, Buresli spends some time talking about his days at his high school back then, the Industrial College. Shortly after high school, he moves to the United States to continue his education. Buresli starts working at the Ministry of Information after coming back from the US as a director and a presenter. Buresli spends the last part of the interview talking about his personal life and family. In the 1990s, he focuses on the Iraqi invasion, the occupation, and the liberation of Kuwait. Abdulmohsin Muzaffarعبد المحسن مظفر
Born in 1939, Abdulmohsin Muzaffar starts this interview with his childhood in Sharq. He talks about his earliest memories in the house he grew up in, the strong bond with their neighbors, and his relationship with his family. He spends some time telling us about his early education with almutawa’a and at Alnajah School, as well as Alsidiq School in the fifties. Muzaffar Also remembers his time as a boy scout and recalls precious childhood memories. Moving into his teenage years and early adulthood, Muzaffar speaks about going to Alshuwaikh Highschool. Shortly after, he quits high school to work to provide for his family. Muzaffar starts working at the British Bank and later at the Post Office. During his employment, he explains that he finished high school and was awarded a scholarship to study in Egypt. After coming back from Egypt, Muzaffar describes the different jobs he occupied and settling with his family in Kuwait. He spends a large portion of the interview talking about the invasion, the atrocities they witnessed, and their journey of leaving Kuwait during the occupation. Mohammad Al-Rumaihiمحمد الرميحيBorn in 1942, Kuwaiti sociologist Dr. Mohammad Alrumaihi starts the interview with talking about his childhood and family background. He speaks about his earliest memories in his house in Sharq and the role of women in old Kuwait. He spends some time telling us about his early elementary education and attending high school in Egypt. Upon finishing high school, he continues his studies and majors in sociology in Cairo. Moving back to Kuwait in the 1960s, Alrumaihi recalls working at the Ministry of Education and leaving Kuwait to England on a scholarship. He elaborates on getting his PhD from Durham University and focusing on Bahrain in his thesis. In the early 70s, he comes back to Kuwait and starts teaching at Kuwait University and working at the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters. He delves into personal and national cultural productions and talks about Iftah ya Simsim and Al-Arabi Magazine. Alrumaihi focuses on the invasion of Kuwait and how they started “Sout Al-Kuwait” newspaper in London. After the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, he tells us about Al-Qurain Festival and various cultural and literary events. At the end of the interview, he shares with us what he is currently working on and his personal interests.في هذه المقابلة يتكلم دكتور علم الاجتماع محمد الرميحي المولود في عام 1942 عن طفولته وخلفية العائلة. ويتكلم عن ذكرياته الأولى في بيته في شرق ودور المرأة بشكل عام في الكويت قديما. كما يتحدث عن تعليمه الابتدائي في الكويت وذهابه للثانوية في مصر. وبعد تخرجه من الثانوية أكمل الرميحي تعليمه في القاهرة متخصصا بعلم الاجتماع. وعاد الرميحي للكويت في الستينات حيث عمل في وزارة التربية وبعدها انتقل مبعوثا للمملكة المتحدة للدارسة. وفي بداية السبعينات رجع الرميحي للكويت ليبدأ التدريس في جامعة الكويت والعمل في المجلس الوطني للثقافة والفنون والآداب. وهنا يقص لنا الرميحي عن بعض الأعمال الشخصية والمحلية الثقافية مثل افتح يا سمسم ومجلة العربي. ويركز الرميحي على الحديث عن الغزو العراقي واصدار جريدة "صوت الكويت" في لندن. وبعد تحرير الكويت في عام 1991، يروي لنا الرميحي قصة مهرجان القرين والفعاليات الثقافية والأدبية العديدة المصاحبة له. ويختم الرميحي المقابلة بالحديث عن أعماله الحالية واهتماماته الشخصية. -
Lulwah Al-Qatamiلولوة القطاميBorn in 1931, Lulwah Alqatami begins the interview with her earliest childhood memories in Sharq. She talks about her parents’ support and encouragement throughout her educational journey. She speaks about the politics of Kuwait in the 1930s and explains why her family left Kuwait to Azzubayr and Albasra in 1938. In Iraq, Alqatami talks about the schools she attended. She describes in detail the neighborhoods they lived in and the homes they made. She also mentions her passion for learning and languages, which lead her to learn French in Albasra. Her childhood in Iraq was colorful and full of adventure. Alqatami then moves into speaking about her education in England, earning a degree in education from Edinburgh, and her early activism as a student in the 1950s. After graduation, she moves back to Kuwait to start teaching in 1960. Her activism picks up as she becomes a founding member of the Women’s Cultural and Social Society in 1963. She also talks about the early days of Kuwait University and working at the Women’s College. Throughout the interview, Alqatami emphasizes her interest and investment in the Palestinian cause. While traveling for work, she discovers that Kuwait has been invaded by Iraq, and she quickly organizes protests and takes care of stranded Kuwaiti families abroad in France and later in Egypt. Mohammad Al-Sanousiمحمد السنعوسيIn this interview, politician and director Mohammad Alsanousi, starts with his childhood in Alsalhiya, Jibla. He talks about his earliest memories including watching movies at the houses of the neighborhood. He tells us about the different schools he attended and the cultural activities they used to participate in. He emphasizes the strong relationship he had with his father and how he learned many life lessons from him. As a young adult, Alsanousi talks about continuing his studies in Egypt, England, and the United States. He recalls his passion for directing, which lead to the production of the famous film Alrisala. His passion continued as he established a company for the production of films and commercial television. He takes in more responsibilities by participating in transforming the celebrations of the national holidays, being in charge of the Touristic Enterprises Company, and establishing the first cinema club. Alsanousi spends the last part of the interview remembering the Iraqi invasion and his role during the occupation. In 1991, he tells us about the destruction they witnessed and the efforts made to rebuild Kuwait after the liberation. At the end of the interview, he talks about his time as a minister in 2006.يبدأ السياسي والمخرج محمد السنعوسي هذه المقابلة بالحديث عن طفولته في الصالحية في جبلة، حيث يتكلم عن أولى ذكرياته ومنها مشاهدة الأفلام في بيوت الجيران كما يكمل الحديث عن المدارس المختلفة التي ارتادها والأنشطة الثقافية التي اعتاد المشاركة بها. كما يركز على العلاقة الوطيدة بينه وبين والده وانه تعلم العديد من دروس الحياة منه. ويستطرد السنعوسي بالحديث عن دراسته في مصر والمملكة المتحدة والولايات المتحدة. كما يذكر شغفه بالإخراج مما أدى لانتاج الفيلم المعروف "الرسالة،" واستمر هذا الشغف حيث انشأ شركة انتاج للافلام والاعلانات التلفزيونية. كما اخذ على عاتقه العديد من المسؤوليات ومنها المشاركة بتحويل احتفالات الاعياد الوطنية وادارته لشركة المشروعات السياحية وانشاء اول نادي سينما في الكويت. يتناول الجزء الأخير من المقابلة فترة الغزو العراقي على الكويت ودور السنعوسي خلال الاحتلال. ويحكي لنا الدمار الذي شهده في عام 1991 والجهود المبذولة في اعادة اعمار الكويت بعد التحرير. وفي نهاية المقابلة يحدثنا السنعوسي عن الفترة التي أمضاها في الحقيبة الوزارية في عام 2006. -
Abdeen Al-Sayeghعابدين الصايغBorn in 1929, Abdeen Alsayegh is considered one of the few Kuwaitis who witnessed the shift from pre-oil Kuwait to modern Kuwait as an adult. He starts this rich interview with talking about his childhood at Alwasat neighborhood. His earliest childhood memory was of Alhadama year in 1934, which he describes in detail. He spends some time telling us about his early elementary education including going to almutawa’a and attending Almubarkiyya and Aljafariyya schools. While talking about his formative years and early adulthood, he tells us about food, cooking, and how they acquired fresh water in the 1930s and 40s. Alsayegh recalls Kuwait during World War II, and the situation of the Kuwaiti Jewish minority before and after. He also speaks about Christians in Kuwait up until the present day. A big portion of the interview is dedicated to the time he spent studying in Egypt and his many visits to Palestine. Upon coming back to Kuwait, he talks about his career and later continuing his education in Lebanon to become a lawyer. The last part of the interview focuses on the invasion of Kuwait and how he left in September to Cairo with his family. After the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, Alsayegh tells us about the destruction Kuwait suffered and the changes it went through. Ruqaya Alkoutرقية الكوتBorn in the early 1950s, Ruqaya Alkout is the first Kuwaiti female director who was famous for directing Seif Al-Arab, a post-liberation play about Saddam Hussain and the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. She starts the interview by talking about being born in Sharq and her family’s background. She talks about growing up in Hawali and her love for acting from an early age. She speaks fondly of her parents and their continuous support for her learning and unconventional career. Alkout recalls her school days and attending high school following the Syrian education system. She describes her schools, the learning experience, and her teachers. She then delves into the beginning of her career and working on directing plays in schools as well as focusing on national themes in the 70s and 80s. The last part of the interview is dedicated to the invasion of Kuwait and the daily life during the occupation. After the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, she tells us about coming back after being in the Emirates for the last few months of the invasion. Alkout shares with us the story behind her major production Seif Al-Arab and working with the best actors in the region. Aamal Al-Sayerآمال السايرBorn in Almurqab in 1956, Aamal Alsayer starts the interview with a brief family background and early childhood in Alqadsiyya. She then talks about her frequent visits to her mother’s family in Aljahra and describes their connection to nature there in detail. She adds that caring for animals and having knowledge of local plants was something her and her siblings grew up with. Influenced by her eldest brother, Alsayer always had an eye for beauty and developed many artistic talents. Alsayer recalls her elementary education and the teachers that impacted her most. As an excellent student, she explains that school was a joy and learning was something she loved. She then moves into talking about her university education. She tells us about studying social work in Qatar and Kuwait in the 1970s. Alsayer also speaks about marrying her cousin at a young age and starting a family while getting a university degree. The last session of the interview tackles the invasion of Kuwait. Alsayer tells us about being in London when the invasion happened while her husband and extended family were still in Kuwait. After the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, Alsayer speaks about the efforts made to rebuild Kuwait. The end of the interview focuses on her career in the field of learning difficulties and establishing the Kuwaiti Association for Learning Differences (KALD).تستهل آمال الساير المقابلة بالحديث عن ولادتها في المرقاب في عام 1956 وعن عائلتها وطفولتها المبكرة في القادسية. ومن ثم تحدثنا السايرعن زياراتها العديدة لعائلة والدتها في الجهراء، وتصف تواصلهم مع البيئة بشكل تفصيلي. كما تضيف ان العناية بالحيوانات والمعرفة بالنباتات المحلية هما أمران نشأت هي واخوتها عليها. وتيمنا بأخيها الكبير، تهتم الساير بالفن والجمال. تذكر لنا الساير تعليمها الابتدائي والمدرسات اللاتي أثرن عليها بشكل كبير. كطالبة مثالية، تقول الساير ان المدرسة كانت مصدر متعة وان التعليم هو شيء محبب لديها. وبعدها تنتقل للحديث عن دراستها الجامعية في مجال العمل الاجتماعي في قطر وفي الكويت في سبعينات القرن الماضي. وتخبرنا الساير عن فترة زواجها في عمر مبكر وحصولها على شهادتها الجامعية. أما القسم الأخير من المقابلة فيتناول فترة الغزو العراقي على الكويت. وتحدثنا الساير عن وجودها في لندن أثناء الاحتلال ووجود زوجها والعائلة الممتدة في الكويت. كما تكمل الساير الحديث بالتركيز على فترة الاعمار التي مرت بها الكويت بعد التحرير في عام 1991. وتركز نهاية المقابلة على عملها الوظيفي في مجال صعوبات التعلم وتأسيس الجمعية الكويتية لاختلافات التعلم. -
Laila Ahmadليلى أحمدBorn in 1955, Laila Ahmad is one of the first female Khaliji critics who worked in several magazines, newspapers, and television shows. The interview starts with her childhood in Sharq and her family’s background. She talks about growing up in Salmiya and Sha’ab and her love for reading and being free-spirited. She speaks about the role of growing up with different languages and cultures and how it enriched her life and view of the world around her. Ahmad recalls the strong bond she had with her parents and grandparents and the importance of her heritage and education. She then talks about her early education in Salmiya Nursery (currently AUK’s building). She describes her schools up until high school, the learning experience, and her activities. She then explains the beginning of her career in journalism and working with the workers’ union in Kuwait. Moving towards the 1980s, she talks about meeting her husband and having a family. The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was a turning point in her life professionally and personally. After the liberation of Kuwait, she tells us about working in the Emirates and then back in Kuwait. Layla Al-Malehليلى المالحBorn in Damascus in 1947, Layla Al-Maleh begins the interview by speaking about her family and childhood in Syria. She sheds light on the nature of Syrian society back then, the beginnings of her interest in reading and writing, as well as takes us through her school journey in Syria. Al-Maleh then moves to study at the American University of Beirut on a scholarship and acquires her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She then works as a lecturer in Syria and Lebanon before going to London to pursue her PhD and get married there.
