Born in Riverside, California in 1957, Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud talks about her childhood growing up in a suburban neighborhood and going to elementary school in the 1960s. She focuses during the first part of the interview on talking about the many travels her and her parents did during her early years. She tells the story of living in Thailand during the Vietnam War and living in Kansas and moving back to California in her late teenage years. Al Rashoud then reminisces about living in Italy in the late 1970s and going to university in California. She speaks about how her passion for photography and writing grew during her university years. In 1979 she moved to Kuwait and started working for the Arab Times. She discusses several articles she covered for the newspaper such as an article on Al Mubarakiyya and one on camel racing in Ahmadi. Al Rashoud recalls Kuwait in the early 1980s and speaks about different activities and places her and her parents used to visit. Moving on to the 1990s, Al Rashoud talks about the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2nd, 1990. She narrates her journey of evacuation from Kuwait to Baghdad and then to London with her two boys. Recalling their stay in California during the occupation, she explains her activism against the Iraqi invasion and how she participated in many events to make the unheard stories public. Al Rashoud then discusses going back to Kuwait after liberation and witnessing all the destruction caused by the Iraqi troops. She explains the recuperation period and the great efforts done to rebuild Kuwait and focuses on the issue of oil fires. The last part of the interview is dedicated to Al Rashoud’s published work and research. She tells the story of working on Kuwait Before and After the Storm, Kuwait Kaleidoscope, and Kuwait's Age of Sail. She also talks about her passion for animal welfare and her volunteer work with rescued animals. She ends the interview by talking about her advocacy for palliative care and support for local environmental organizations.
